Traveling to Berlin Germany: Part I

Once we landed in Berlin, we had to figure out how to get to the hotel. I'll admit we had some trouble figuring out the machine to buy our train ticket. However, we did finally make it to our first hotel, the Scandic Hotel Kurfürstendamm. I absolutely adored the view from our room.

The hotel had excellent customer service and we were greeted upon arrival by the lovely front desk attendant, who actually ended up giving us a two minute breakdown of the different districts in the city. He told us where the good food was, where the best shopping lay and even where we could find entertainment. Kudos to Scandic for hiring some knowledgeable, enthusiastic individual!

Our first order of business was visiting the eccentric town of Friedrichshain, based on the recommendations. We had some coffee, because duh, you need coffee all the time ;) and I finally had some real authentic German goulash. All I have to say is Yuuuum. Looking at this picture now is making my mouth water.

The Visit Berlin office was kind enough to provide Welcome passes for my boyfriend and I, which granted us transportation access for the full week. It was a lifesaver. If you travel to Berlin, make sure you get one. That way you don't get hassled and you don't waste time buying tickets each time you want to hop on the U or the S, or any other transportation line for that matter. 

The next day, our first order of business was finding the Berlin Wall. We ended up taking a stroll through the monumental areas first to look through photos and read about the history, as well as taking a stroll through the Berlin Park. We did finally mosey our way to the wall, which was a really neat experience. It's amazing that we were able to be in a place of such history. I took AP European History and I remember learning so much about Germany, and Berlin specifically. I used to wonder if I'd ever make it to the city, so it was amazing to be there in the flesh.

Before we got to the actual wall, we stopped at the Ost-West Cafe which served delicious coffee and food. There was only one waitress in there, but she was a complete and utter rockstar.

Later in the day, we walked through the city and ended up on Museum Island. The museums were so magnificent and the architecture absolutely breathtaking. Unfortunately we didn't have a chance to visit inside, but I took some snaps from our walk down the river.

The attraction that had my boyfriend's eye was Bradenburg Gate so we ended up in the touristy part of town towards the end of the day. There were so many people here and it was hard to take a photo without five people just walking in front of us, but I tried my best!

This is also when we stumbled across the Reichstag building and I found out about the Dome (which we visited another day.) This building looked so regal and patriotic. There was a peaceful protest going on at the time, which was a little scary yet interesting at the same time.
