Brushes are essential. As much as we want to use our hands, we need brushes to make magic happen.
They are needed for making foundation flawless, blending that shadow, putting on pigmented lipstick and so forth. They're also the only way we get that perfect clean and flawless look. It's what we all strive for when it comes to makeup.

All of the orange brushes you see above come in the Real Techniques Core Set, while the purple ones come from the Real Techniques Starter Set. My favorite eyeshadow brush is Sigma's E55- it's a total winner. I use the contour brush as a highlighting brush because it's thin and perfect for getting a gorgeous highlight to the top of my cheeks. I use the MAC 129 for blush and the Blush Brush for application of a setting powder to get the liquid foundation solidified. The stipling brush is great for liquid foundation and liquid blush because it evenly and effectively spreads the product.
What makeup brushes do you use? I am in the market for new additions because trust me, a girl can never have enough brushes...makes it easier not to wash them for a while ;)
